"It was not the first of the powerful Magnum’s bullet that I felt. It was the impact of his body against mine as he shot the second bullet. There was another loud roar, but nothing attached to it. But the sting just began there. My body twisted around when he hit me. The sound of my ribs cracking echoed in the parking lot. I could feel within me their jagged edges trying to rip through my skin. His elbow knocked me in my jaw. The world had spun around me as I had fallen down slowly to the pavement. My teeth bit down against my tongue as my jaw crashed against the hard ground. As blood poured from my mouth I saw it surround a hole in the pavement, the other roar, the third bullet hole.

As I stared at the bullet hole on the ground with my broken glasses beside it, I thought I had imagined everything else had happened. Maybe I dreamed up this pain, maybe I had finally gone mad. It was just another of my nightmares. I had made it home. I was at home, wasn’t I?

But the pain began to register in my mind. This pain was nothing compared to what I thought pain was like in my nightmares. It was nothing compared to the restless nights. I wanted to open up my mouth to scream, but it was shattered. I turned over. The world looked as if it had stopped on its axis. No clouds moved, the air waited, and the rain slowed down. This is not real. There was a strange smell in the air. I had smelled it before. It reminded me of the smell of a cut. My hand was on top of my torso and I felt something warm and wet. Just the rain. I could feel my other hand as a thick puddle grew larger and larger beneath me. Rain. Please let it be just the rain. But when I lifted up my hand it was all dark red.

Blood.
